Exploring the chemical reaction of acidic lemon juice when in contact with Bi-carbonate soda. A little food colouring is sure to make this inquiry experience extra amazing!
Using a fork, dig into your lemons and release the juice so it can react to the added bi-carbonate soda. Be prepared for some lovely colour stained fingers, hands and clothes! As with any fun activity, the messier the better and the richer the learning potential!
Doing this on the grass saved us worrying ‘too’ much about stains on concrete or indoor flooring, and re-purposing the previous night’s pizza box was a great way to contain some of the mess and support an easy clean up.
A juicer was requested so the little scientists could follow their theory, that juice on its own would produce a more effective fizzy reaction!
The findings of this science experiment? FUN!
Using disposable gloves could stop stained fingers
Absolutely could! But with little hands disposable gloves can be a little big and impact on children’s grip. Consideration should also be given to environmental impact of using plastic gloves. A little stained skin for a few hours is probably a better trade off.
