I am a lover of board games and thankfully E has been bitten by this classic style of gaming bug!

The newest addition to our growing collection is Monopoly Junior and we are loving it!

It’s for ages 5+ but E at 3.5yrs, was doing rather well with this game of strategy. It fostered his developing numeracy/mathematical skills including counting by rote, rational counting, subitizing, and addition, as well as strategy and managing money. It’s a shame the currency symbol is the Monopoly style and not Aus dollar sign $ so he could relate this more easily to our currency, but he wasn’t impeded by this in his play.

If you love board games and you have a young child at home, I definitely recommend sourcing this fun game. It also nurtures family time and bonding! We even used video chat to include Nana in a game; using a dice at home she was able to roll and join in the fun!

Another fan favourite in our house, Guess Who!

Promotes developing vocabulary and communication skills, strategy skills, following rules and instructions, and respectfully and ethically noticing and identifying similarities and differences amongst people.

It’s 6+ but E at 3.5yrs enjoyed playing this game with support. He was focusing heavily on hair colour and gender, or obvious accessories such as hats or glasses. He sometimes confuses when he needs to push characters down, as the game is played in the negative [if they don’t have what you asked, you knock them down]. This is a complex concept he will learn over time.
